Home

We Praise the Lord we arrived home safe and sound last night around 6:17. It was great to see our family and to come home to flowers, homemade chicken soup and spag. sauce and noodles, homemade bread and desert prepared by loving friends welcoming us home.
Our time in Zhitomyr was wonderful and fruitful. Pastor Alexander greeted us warmly and he and his wife Ira had us for dinner on Saturday at their new home. We had such great time of fellowship with our friends. Pastor Alexander ( who is 49) almost died a year ago from poisons in his body caused by his liver, all of his organs started to shut down and he was paralyzed for 40 days and still has no feeling in his hands or feet. It reminded us of a passage from Phillipians 2:27 For indeed he was sick to the point of death, but God had mercy on him, and not on him only but also on me, lest I should have sorrow upon sorrow. His church has around 1500 members who are actively walking out their faith in Christ. They feed the poor, minister to orphans, go to the hospitals and lay hands on sick people and pray for them, evangelize their neighbors , pray non stop at weekly prayer meetings and are a real powerhouse of love in the city. We are always so blessed to be in the church there. During worship on Sunday, which is very lively, PW was grabbed by the men who were dancing a Jewish dance up front and so there was PW dancing around in a circle holding hands with our brothers in Christ. It was so much fun to see and I took a picture which is not real clear, but I will be sure to post it so you can also enjoy. PW preached on Sunday and then we had several more hours of fellowship with Alexander and Ira and a messianic pastor Anatoly and his wife Luba. I will post a picture of them later today also.
Our flights were all on time, the seats were comfortable and the service was excellent.
We are looking forward to getting back into our routine here at home and although our hearts are always torn between two nations, we know that God has a purpose in our coming and going. It is such an honor to serve him and to play a small part in what God is doing on the earth today.
Pastor Bill did a wonderful job holding things together here at home. The reports of his powerful sermons have reached our ears and we can't wait to hear them ourselves. We could not do what we do without his ministry here at home.
Please be sure to check back tomorrow and look at the pictures from the trip. There will be lots of them for sure.
With love and thanksgiving for your faithful prayers and financial support. Wayne and Sherry

Friday - A Bittersweet Ending

Today was our final day of ministry here in Uzghorod. It is always bittersweet. We are usually tired and ready to go home. We miss our family but also hate to say goodbye to new friends. Today was no exception. The Methodist pastors here are on fire for God, have a deep desire to preach the word of God and to see souls saved. It has been a delight to work with them.
*
Today Sherry taught on the Role of the Woman and ended up having a lively discussion with one of the pastors who challenged her when she said that is was OK for a woman to disobey her husband if he asked her to sin, he was referring to Sara when Abraham sent her to Pharoah. PTL for PW who saved the day. The pastor ended up agreeing with us once we stated our case from scriptures. It was touch an go for a few minutes. But we asked questions such as "if a husband wants the wife to watch pornography with him, should she obey?" That was the clincher for him, he finally understood what we were saying.
*
After the class, we took group pictures, and took communion together. It was very sweet. Sergei and his wife Esther had us for lunch and after a visit with them, we came back here to Nehemiah to pack up our stuff. We have been given so much candy that we have to make room for it. Our grandchildren will be delighted.
*
Tomorrow we fly to Kiev and will be picked up by our friends from the Church in Zhitomyr( 2 hours away) and will spend the day with Pastor Alexander and his wife and then on Sunday PW will preach at his church and we will go back to Kiev to spend the night since we leave at 5:30 a.m. on Monday.
*
Please keep us in prayer over the next few days. It will be alot of travel and little sleep. Also, would you please pray that we can get seats with leg room for PW on our overseas leg of the trip. Oh and please pray for my Uncle Norm. He is in the hospital and his kidneys have quit working and they are putting him on dialysis. Thank you.

Thursday

Today has been busy as usual. PW taught on Sources of Conflict, Differences between Men and Women and the Peace and Joy Principle. It was good teaching and the pastors and wives seemed to really be taking in the truth. After lunch we went with Pastor Sergei and met with Pastor Edik and his wife at a local restaurant for desert. Pastor Edik asked us if we would be willing to come for two weeks next spring and teach at his bible school. He wants us to teach for one week on the family and then one week teaching on how to counsel. He is wanting his people to be equipped in these areas. We were blessed and honored that he would ask us to come. Please pray for wisdom for us. There are just so many invitations and we cannot accept them all with our responsibilities at home so we must hear from God on which ones will have the most impact in helping the people in this culture. If you remember we were also invited to come to Ludansk this coming spring and in the fall sometime we have been asked to come to Romania and Latvia to teach, so you can see our dilemma.
*
We ended our day with teaching at the Methodist church on How to Resolve conflict and then Richard and Anya picked us up and we went to their home to visit and have dinner and say goodbye.
*
All in all it was a wonderful day. Thank you CCF for allowing us to come. When we come, you come and only eternity will reveal the fruit of these times.
*
Today is our final day of teaching and then we will pack. I will update when we are finished and pictures will be posted by next Wed so please be sure to check back to have a look at your brothers and sisters from Ukraine.

Wednesday

Today has been another very busy day. Wayne has had the strongest anointing on him this week it has been a joy to watch and I am so glad because I have been sick and he has had to carry all the teaching load. Anyway, today he finished teaching on the role of the husband and also taught on the process of change. Tonight we ministered at the Methodist church on Parenting and once again PW taught under a strong anointing. The time just flew and everyone there seemed to be blessed.
*
At lunch today we met with a young American pastor who is ministering in Lviv. We had a great time of fellowship. His ministry is church planting and also student ministry. He and a native Ukrainian man are planting a church and this guy is full of ideas and life but very mature and grace filled. He is burdened for the marriages here in the country and wanted to pick our brains on how to counsel couples and also what materials and resources we have used. We exchanged email addresses so we can get to know each other and see where it leads. We were blessed to be able to help and also to refer him to Joe Propri's contact here in Odessa where there is a Biblical Counseling Institute. It will be a great help in training the pastors.
*
Tomorrow we have been invited to meet with a pastor in Uzghorod who wants to talk to us about doing a seminar in his church next summer. This is an answer to prayer because we have so wanted to branch out into the churches here in Uzghorod. We have been in some doing training but not as often as we would like. So please keep us in prayer as we meet with Edik after lunch.
*
In spite of all this wonderful time of ministry we miss our church so much. We are counting the days until we are home with our family and church "family".
*
Blessings to you all.
Love, Wayne and Sherry

Tuesday

Today has been good although a challenge in some ways. I have been sick all day with a virus of some sort so I did not attend the sessions today, but Wayne said that as he taught on the Role of the husband as Leader one of the Methodist pastors asked him what he taught about Women pastors. That led to an hour long bunny trail and very lively discussion. Of course one of the pastors in the room was a woman. So you can see they are definitely not quiet which is good but challenging because they sometimes interrupt with questions. Tomorrow he will finish the teaching.
*
I taught the women at the Methodist church tonight. They had asked me to teach on Respect. They seemed to receive the teaching and we had refreshments afterward and no one left so that is always a good sign.
*
Please pray for us to have the mind of the Lord on what to teach the next few days. We want to hit the mark with what this group needs. God has been so faithful and we know He will continue.
Have a blessed day tomorrow.
Love, Wayne and Sherry

Monday

Today has been a very busy day. We had a counseling session at 10:30 then met Anya and Richard to go into town to meet with our friends Valodya and Oxana...If you remember, Oxanas sister and family were tragically murdered a few months ago. We had lunch with them and caught up on our lives then left and met with a young woman whose husband is physically abusing both her and her child. In the Ukraine they do not have safe houses for women who are suffering like this so as a general rule, women do not know what to do and as a Christian she did not want to disobey God. We of course told her to leave him immediately for the child's protection and helped her come up with a plan that could be followed. Please pray for her and her husband. God can surely help this man overcome his sin issue so the family can be restored.
*
Tonight we started our marriage seminar with the Methodist pastors and wives. We had a good group who were very interactive and excited. This should prove to be a good week. Two of the pastors, one Methodist and his friend who pastors a Charismatic church, approached us and asked that we come to their city next spring. This would be in the far Eastern part of Ukraine near the Russian border. There are 4 different denominational churches that invited us.
Wayne and I shared our testimony and also taught on Sabbath rest and the purpose of marriage.
*
Please continue to keep us in prayer for the rest of the week, that we not only stay healthy, but that our lives make an impact for Gods glory.
Love, Wayne and Sherry

Sunday

Today was very busy and started quite early. We were in Methodist churches today which was very interesting. The one was very traditional and they did not have a worship leader of any kind, but the people just started singing hymns accapella. It was beautiful and you could tell they love the Lord and also love to sing. We had lunch with the Pastor and his wife and that was nice. She is a fabulous cook and we had Borscht which was homemade. The women here have to cook everything from scratch and it takes about 2 hours to prepare a meal each day. Can you imagine? But the end result is excellent food and they present it beautifully. We also had rice and meat and pickles.
*
The second service was at the Charismatic Methodist church in Uzghorod. The Pastor Sergei is the man who invites us to come each time we are in town. His church has a young congregation that meets in the evening and the worship leader is a truly annointed young man. He wrote several of the songs that we sang tonight. Wayne preached a great sermon as always (this is Sherry saying that). We had dinner at his home after the service and had rice and beef stir fry and poppy seed and nut patica. Yummmmm, I am afraid we have both gained weight with all this good food. One cannot turn down a hostess you know. :>)))
*
On our way out of the building this afternoon PW slipped on step that had been covered by a rug and fell and hurt is knee, ankle and elbow. Please pray that he does not have any problems with it since he will be standing alot this week. It is starting to swell so we think he sprained his ankle. It sure scared me since I thought he had had a stroke and fell, because he just laid there. PTL that all is well.
*
I have a horrid cold and am dosing myself with echinecia tea. Mission trips are so much fun. :>))) See why we need your prayer?
*
We heard that Pastor Bill preached another great message. This week his sermon was on the Passover.
*
Well off to bed because we have an early morning.
Blessings, Wayne and Sherry

Day Six and Seven

Day Six
Today went well. The pastor and his wife were able to be in the seminar all day today so that was nice. Wayne taught today on parenting and did a great job. We covered things parents need to know about kids, the things parents need to know about parents and then the fathers mandate, short version, and ended with the progression of teenage rebellion. There were lots of questions today and that is always good because it shows they are listening. In the end they presented us with a lovely plate as a thankyou and gave us an invitation to come again. Many of the people approached us and told us how much they had gotten out of the teachings and told us that it has produced change in their relationships. We praise the Lord and as usual are so amazed that He has chosen to use us in this way. We found the people in the church here friendly and very hungry for truth. They spent the time leaning forward and also asking us to repeat things because they were writing it all down.
*
Day 7
We have arrived safely in Kiev and will spend some time resting and then enjoy a movie with Richard and Anya. We have had an intersting day of travel. The driver was a wonderful man from the church who drove like he wanted to be a race car driver. The roads here are terrible and filled with car size pot holes so he was not only driving fast, but had to dodge the holes. Anya laughed and said she was going to kiss the ground when she got out of the car. :>))) It was definitely a faith thing today. I was hoping all of you were praying for us last night before bedtime since we were traveling at that time.
*
Tomorrow we will be leaving for Uzghorod and we would appreciate prayer as we travel and also as we start our week of mini sty. We arrive late tomorrow night and then on Sunday Wayne is preaching in a village a half hour from Uzghorod and then will also preach in the evening at a different church. Monday we start the Pastors retreat. Meanwhile, we have already gotten calls from two different couples asking to meet with us for counseling while we are there. Our schedule is going to be very tight and we would ask that you pray that we can see all those who want to meet with us. God is able.
*
Have a blessed weekend and know you are loved and missed very much.

Day Four

note: PW = Pastor Wayne
*
On day four we covered communication to resolve conflict. We took a whole work shop and looked at the One Another passages from Scripture. We had the couples together brainstorm how they could apply the passages in their home. They loved it and did not want to stop! PW taught on the process of change so they would know how to apply what we talked about. The days closed with Q & A. We walked out of the building to find two inches of snow on the ground. Spring has not arrived here in the Ukraine.
*
Tomorrow will be our last day of teaching. We are going to Kiev on Friday instead of Saturday. Because Nick, the pastor is going out of town, it is easier for him to take us Friday. We will spend the night in a hotel and Saturday with Anya and Richard. This gives us an unplanned day of rest with no travel, PTL!
*
Once again, thank you for faithfully praying for us. All of the comments you have left on the blog have been so encouraging!

Day Three

Praise the Lord that our counseling went well today. We spent 2 hours with the couple and they seemed to respond well to the advice we gave them.
*
Today was the second day of our seminar. The Lord was gracious and everyone was able to come so the seats all were full. Sherry taught on the Role of the Wife and then PW taught on Causes of conflict and the Differences of Men and Woman. We laughed so much today that the time just flew by. One lady got so tickled with the teaching on the differences that she literally put her head down on the desk and howled. Every time she got control she would think about it again and start laughing all over. It was very funny. This group of people is very interactive so they not only laugh, they talk to you while you teach which makes it very easy to share the word. They also lean forward and take notes. All in all it has been very fruitful and fun.
*
The sun is shining here today and we are hoping that the weather will improve for the rest of the week. We cannot post pictures yet since we are using a land line but as soon as we arrive in Uzghorod we will post the pictures of your brothers and sisters here in Kirovograd.
*
Thanks for all the comments. It is encouraging to us. Have a blessed day.
With love, Wayne and Sherry

Day Two

Today went really well. The church we were at has about 500 members and the place was packed out. PW preached two messages in 45 minutes and it was great. A DVD of the message was recorded and we hope to bring a copy home. The first message was There Was a Man Sent from God (about John the Baptist) and the second was the Peace and Joy Principle. Wayne preached with enthusiasm and authority and used quite a bit of humor. We shared communion with our brothers and sisters here, a very special time. After communion we prayed with the church leaders for the sick. Around 50 people come forward.
*
After service we went out to dinner at a Ukrainian restaurant with authentic food. Anyone want to guess what PW ordered? A pizza. Can you believe it?!
*
Tomorrow will be full. We are counseling two couples then doing the seminar from 3-8 p.m. A clock with Ukrainian time can be found on the left sidebar of our blog. Thanks for praying for us!

Day One

Today's seminar went well. Our day started at 7 a.m., with the seminar starting at noon. We met with the pastor and his wife before we began. There were 30 people in attendance for today's meeting. PW taught on the Purpose of Marriage and the Role of the Husband. The people were very interactive, laughing and responding to questions. They liked the idea they were getting homework in the marriage checkups. They wanted to know if they had to turn them in or keep them. We told them it was for their benefit and to use it personally as couples. We also gave them conversation starters to help them in their communication. Afterwards the responses were great. Many went to the pastor and told him he was right when he told them they would be blessed by the teaching. They can not wait until Monday and neither can we!There were several couples that the pastor said had troubled relationships and he was glad they came.
*
Afterwards we went to the pastor's home for dinner and visited with him and his wife and Richard and Anya (our translator) for several hours. We are now headed to bed to rest for tomorrow's preaching at Living Hope Church.
*
We are praying for you all as you worship together tomorrow!

Arrival in Kirovograd

We are safe and sound in Kirovograd. Pastor Nick is precious and very hospitable. We have our own apt. with a wood burning fireplace...much to PW's delight!

It worked

Wow the Lord allowed me to get on so I can post. I want to say thank you to all of you who have commented. It blesses us no end to know that you are praying for us and that you are dropping us little notes.
It is snowing out at the moment and the sun is shining at the same time. Anya and Richard are on the way hopefully to meet us and Nick will pick us up around 11. We travel all day today so appreciate your prayers.
We are getting excited in our spirits as we pray about beginning our ministry tomorrow. It is always such an adventure to meet new people and know that even if we don't speak the same language we serve the same Lord. It is such a privilege to be able to play even a small part in helping them to grow in any way in their walk with God.
Oh and Rannie, we are also praying that the Father will allow us to come to the Phillipines some day and meet you in person. We have grown in our love for you and your church and can't wait to see what the Lord will do in the coming days. Meanwhile keep on faithfully serving our Lord.
Well must go and get into the word so we are ready for tomorrow.
Blessings to you all,
Wayne and Sherry

Arrival and Unexpected Meetings

Mom and Dad arrived safely in Ukraine around 5:30 this morning our time. The flight was very uneventful and roomy. When they arrived in Frankfurt they 'happened' to see Gordon Wright, who was also on his way to Kiev for a week of teaching. They were able to sit next to each other and visit the entire flight. How encouraging it must have been to see a fellow American believer and be able to encourage one another on the way to minister to others.
*
Please continue to pray for them daily! You can see the time in Ukraine on the left sidebar of the blog. It is helpful as you pray for them to know where they are in their day.

Favor

Unexpected surprises - that is what the Lord had up His sleeve for us today. We were headed for Chicago and heard our name over the loud speaker. When we arrived at the desk we were told they were going to have to change us to United leaving out of Washington instead of Chicago. The best part? Without us saying a word, the lady said that because of the inconvenience they were putting us in economy plus seats! That means five extra inches of leg room and wider seats! Those of you who have flown know that is like being given front row seats at an Indian's game. We are overcome with thankfulness and gratitude to the Lord for this answered prayer. Keep praying, please.

Praise the Lord

We have to thank you all for praying about the airline negotiations. Lufthansa pilots and management have reached an agreement and they will not strike. So that means we will leave on schedule in the morning. Hopefully we will be able to post in Kiev and then daily while in Kirovograd, but if not we will give an update over the phone to Jen and she will post for us.
Please keep us in prayer each day. On friday we will be traveling for about 5 hours by car and they are predicting snow showers. Now here in the States that would pose no problem, but in Ukraine the roads are horrid and the idea of sliding all over the highway is not our idea of a relaxing drive. So please pray for safety for us. We will start teaching on Saturday and then it will be a marathon daily the rest of the week. We just found out our seminar will not start until 5 each day Mon - Fri and we will teach until 9:30 so it will be along day. Of course on a mission trip flexibility is the name of the game so we are prepared if things change again.
Blessings to you all,
Wayne and Sherry
